In a continued effort to build capacity within the Inyo-Mono Region, the Inyo-Mono Program Staff is hosting a new course entitled Maps 101. The course will assist participants in making computer generated digital maps and will teach skills that can be applied to an infinite number of mapping needs and applications. The course will use water system boundary maps as an example in the curriculum, but participants will not be limited to creating only water boundary maps.
Why?
Everyone knows paper maps are useful and digital maps are even more so! Currently there is an immense amount of information online. By having a digital map, you can easily take advantage of the ever growing amounts of online geographic information. In addition, this course will help LAFCos to comply with legislative requirements from Assembly Bill 54 and Senate Bill 244 which require mapping components of water systems and/or fire protection systems in associated local and disadvantaged communities. With the current technology available, you can make many of these maps in house! (Some maps may require survey level accuracy and cannot be replaced by the type of mapping taught in this course)
Who?
This class is ideal for involved community leaders, water system staff/ board member, field personnel, or anyone who has a need for a computerized map. No prior mapping knowledge is required to participate in this course. However basic familiarity of computers is expected. Skills learned in this course will be applicable to a number of other mapping applications that have endless utilities for small organizations. Participants will use all open-source (free) software packages to create a map from start to finish (Google Earth, Water Boundary Tool, and ArcGIS Online, and More).
To Participate:
Due to the nature of this course and the need for computers for each participant, class sizes will be limited in size and reserved on a first come first serve basis. If you or someone from your organization is interested in participating, please send a notice of interest to Program Staff by September 30, 2013.
Where & When?
We will schedule course times and locations dependent upon expressed interest. Courses will be scheduled near the end of September and course locations will likely be held at Cerro Coso Community College Computer Labs in Bishop and/or Mammoth Lakes. Classes will be approximately 2-3 hours in length.
